If you’ve been window shopping recently, you’d be hard pressed not to find animal print, suiting, and hints of 70s inspiration. Speaking as a lifetime supporter of all things denim and fringe, this decade cannot resurface enough to satisfy my flower power craze. As we turn the corner from a certain corny holiday, it’s important to keep in mind what makes a retro outfit chic and contemporary vs costume-y.
The two most important tips to remember during wardrobe time-travel is to:
- Avoid pairing more than one stereotypical garment with another
- Mix in plenty of modern pieces
Case in point, a pillbox hat paired with a sheer body suit and culottes vs a sweater set is a distinct line in the sand from cool to Doris Day.
For this ensemble, I tapped into this far out trend thanks to a denim killer, a certain silhouette, and some groovy eyewear.
The reason this denim dress is so quintessentially 70s, is because it’s actually that old! I found this gem a few years back, while on a steep beignet sugar-high in New Orleans. From the yarn detailing, bishop sleeve, and floral buttons it couldn’t check off any more boxes.
With regards to the top layer, cape coats may date a few decades prior; however, wool and poncho themes carried strong notes in the 70s, so we’ll have to award partial credit at least. Plus, navy and camel are a timeless love story I won’t stand to see unrecognized.
For my final nod to this throwback look and last-ditch effort to catch the eye of one Michael Kelso, I threw on a pair of tinted aviators courtesy of Mango.
To finish off the look I opted for my favorite set of velvet booties by Michael Kors along with a pair of sheer tights.
70s garb is certainly ‘right on’ trend, so try mixing in some corduroy, patchwork, flare or wrap shapes, or platforms before the new year rings in or until the fashion cycle finally admits it’s here to stay.
