Given the expressive and fluid nature of fashion, the very notion of a set of fashion ‘rules’ to confine the style-inclined is more of a faux pas than any harmless color combination. According to this supposed rule, the fraternization of navy and black is a crime. The argument commonly made against the color pairing is that when next to each other, their similar tones clash. However, when styled correctly, this rule is busted.
The two defendants in question were seen commingling on the streets of Chelsea; one of navy, draped stature last seen in Tibi’s pre-fall collection and the other shiny, black, and prematurely scuffed. Likely due to clumsiness, will investigate further.
In order to avoid said clash, it’s best to break up the two solid neutrals with either a pattern or some skin. With at least a little disconnect, the two are able to be seen as separates without blending unwanted eyesores. This belted Tibi number came equipped with a fabulous leg slit and asymmetrical hemline that allowed enough space to separate the Zara boots. To the same effect, combining two different fabrications also busts the myth, in my case with black patent and matte navy.
Black and navy both exude the three treasured S’s: sophistication, sleekness, and simplicity. With of course a little balance, it’s only logical to mix the two powerhouses -so forget the either/or and any other fashion myth you’ve heard. Fashion is all about fun, so I guess the rules only exist to be broken.
