Fortunately for me, the stars aligned and the tail end of my winter break coincided with some off-days my girl boss mother had stored in the bank. With such free time at hand, we whisked away together for a night in the lovely (and subzero) Chicago.
Along with some much-cherished quality time with my mom, I took the opportunity to lend from her closet one last time before returning to New York. The two undeniably amazing pieces calling my name? A floor-length, chocolate brown, vintage Marvin Richards coat and beige, leather sling-backs with a wood/transparent heel. While both of these pieces felt formal in nature, some upgraded downtown styling gave them just the push they needed to embrace their alter egos…
Look 1: A Grace Kelly / Stevie Nicks medley
Now, the luxe exuded from a floor-length, fur-lined coat definitely translates very proper and as such, to typically be used for dress wear. However, with city legs and contemporary confidence, this Marvin Richard took a new form when paired with some Citizen of Humanity denim, Zara western booties, modern sunnies, and a layered band T (which, sidebar, was actually bought for me by my brother at our first show together at Red Rocks to see the Steve Miller Band).
To not completely stray from the original class of the garment, this evergreen beret and gold jewelry put the cherry on top and plucked the final note for this daytime medley.
Look 2: The Business Mogul Zoe Kravitz mashup
The neutral tone and classic silhouette of these pumps would definitely fit the foot of a seasoned business woman. Clacking from board meeting to luncheon, she was ready to let her hair down and embrace the urban jungle she’s been busy running. Said embrace brought upon by a nudge of boho outfitting thanks to a pair of Asos cheetah-printed jeans, a silver hardware fanny pack, and a sleeveless cardigan.
Staying true to office-attire roots, these heels were matched with a set of black tights and two fastened barrettes on either side of my newly cut locks.
Formal piece are crucial for any wardrobe, but learning how to integrate them into weekend wear can give a whole new meaning to the investment. As always, fashion should be fun, so give your clothing some new scenery and don’t be afraid to try mixing unlikely pieces.
