Fun game: are these band or color names…Atomic Tangerine, Cancun Sand, Chickadee, Quiet Veranda, and Kansas Grain? Even more fun, they’re all colors! Whether deemed hues, tints, shades, or pigments, the world would be an oh-so-unfortunate place without glorious COLOR.
Unlikely pairing is one of my favorite vernacular tango partners because it shifts one’s perspective and dusts off window sills of views unknown. A match that makes you think ‘I don’t know why I like this, but I’m not mad about it’. Things like blue moon ice cream and cayenne pepper, flip-flops and a two-piece suit (shoutout to Tibi Fall 2019), alcohol and egg whites, and my color combo of the day: green and purple.
I had the pleasure of exploring Tribeca’s Color Factory over the weekend and through every room I was delighted by each creatively curated and rainbow coated display. A thorough yet not exhausted investigation of ROYGBIV and everything in between. Shenanigans varied from a conveyor belt of macaroons, infographic merry-go-rounds, a 1960s dance floor, and a perfect pitch xylophone chamber, all leading up to an entirely robin’s egg blue ball pit.
The whole interactive experience felt like a tribute to our youthful craving for exploration, satisfying our innate curiosity spanning across all five senses. A mental jungle gym of silliness and our child-like spirits.
Just the anticipation of this kaleidoscope adventure, had me excited to dress for the occasion. My unlikely pairing began with these insane, embroidered purple cowboy boots (could there ever be a more appropriate time?) that I came across on my way home from an errand. A story that would literally begin with, ‘a retired belly dancer walks into a flea market…’.
Not having the strength to cover the boots nor brave a skirt, a eureka moment dawned on me with this cropped sage jumpsuit. Thus birthing a color story to build upon!
From there, I upped the green ante with a more vibrant, parakeet turtleneck underneath and added my go-to H&M blazer for warmth. To physically tie the whole look together, I cinched my popped collar with my roomie’s belt that couldn’t have been more perfect! Two points for satisfaction.
Color is such a wonderful thing and should be played with as much as possible. Give six thousand people the same illustration and set of paint and they’ll never be identical. Color can change your mood, take your breath away, portray your personality, and make statements.
Some of the greatest things in life come from color. A sunset you’ll never forget about, Rihanna floating up the steps of the MET with a 20 foot long train, a technicolor coral reef buzzing with life, and a bowl full of sprinkles.
Notice it.
Appreciate it.
