Fashion’s most ironic tendency is the cyclical nature of what piques our interest. Funny enough, as we close out 2019 and enter the new decade, from the runway to the street, 90s mania is everywhere. Flashy jewelry, torso swallowing belts, scrunchies, and of course leather are inescapable. The 2019 version of 90s redux can be found in more tailored silhouettes, classic updates, and with hardware-clad design details. Leather’s timelessness and versatility lends itself towards evolutionary techniques and new applications to be explored nearly every cycle of the calendar. Investing in leather is never a bad idea, so here are three ways I’m exploring leather myself this season.
Look 1: Head to Toe
Speaking of new applications, this overall dress! A leather dress certainly is nothing new, but the strap design, front pocket addition, and functional hardware supply all the ingredients for a proper update. In dressing up a piece, try to let the garment speak for itself and limit layering. I opted for a flesh-toned bodysuit underneath to feature the upper elements of this H&M dress, while leaving room for accessories that can supplement without overpowering.
Look 2: Leather on Leather
I’ve always been a sucker for a full midi skirt, so when I came across this perfect almond shade in Anthropologie, I was helpless. The silhouette craze has been in full effect since Dior’s Fall 2019 runway presentation and believe me I would have added a saddle belt if I could…
Within accessories, try mixing leathers of similar shades to play within a common palette. I doubled down with these exposed zipper Aldo booties from the depths of the family wardrobe. More proof that styles resurface and buying clothes that last matter.
Look 3: Tailored Trouser
Leather skinnies translate as very outdated and rarely ever flattering. A more laid-back update is the emergence of the leather trouser with a clean cut hem. While a jogger could also fit the bill, a straight trouser provides a more modern look that lends itself to more outfitting opportunities. The pleat front detail on these H&M brand trousers add just the detail to correctly manipulate the fabric to the desired fit effect.
