Hey you! Yeah you in the maroon turtleneck and dark wash jeans. No, yes you in the grey frock and mustard scarf. Sis in the all-black way in back! While I love a classic demure moment in the ladder half of my preferred seasons, it’s time to step outside of mother nature’s color palette inspo.
As a self proclaimed maximalist, getting dressed is always my favorite way to start the day. How can I rework an old piece? Bring an unseasonal item into my rotation? Snag a uniquely classic ingredient? The easiest way to keep it interesting and conjure these head-scratchers into something fresh and wearable is through this checklist:
- Pick a base piece so at least an element of your Fall/Winter uniform is in tact
- Layer mindfully!
- Make your outermost piece the punctuation mark with a statement coat, vibrant accessory, or double down with both
- Try infusing a pop of color in your beauty for the day using a fun shadow, lip color, or novelty eyeliner
For this look, I first coupled up my favorite Aritzia white trousers with a cashmere turtleneck, snuggled together second-date style, bringing my spring and winter favorites together in matrimony. Over the top, wrapped in approval, was a member of my fall uniform (and checklist point numero uno), my trusty camel overcoat. To then dip my toe in a more color-centric approach, I quite literally slipped on my mulberry Timberland sneaks to get the ball rolling.
Moving down the list, I layered over the top a patchwork, technicolor blanket scarf and belted the whole damn thing to give my classic coat a little design upgrade. Lastly, I added the only tool I have in my beauty repertoire, a loud mouth -er- I mean lip.
As the temperature starts to drop and our motivation follows suit, try charging the start of your day with something bright, something unexpected, and something supremely less boring. They say dress for the job you want to have, well perhaps we all should start dressing for the mood we want to achieve!
